Pollution behind Evrotas fish kills, local residents report

Dead fish are being washed up along the Evrotas River in the past few days due to pollution of the water, local authority representatives from villages along the river in the region of Skala Lakonia said in a protest resolution on Friday.

They complained that the river, which is a main water supply for surrounding homes and farmland, part of the Natura network and whose delta is one of the last important wetlands in southern Greece, had been abandoned to its fate by authorities and was at risk from economic interests.

"In the past few days we have once more become witnesses of the rape of the Evrotas ecosystem. Hundreds of fish are suffocating in the waters polluted by the wastes of oil presses and other polluting units," the resolution reported.

They called for immediate action from the authorities to locate the units responsible for polluting the river and take measures for the protection of the river.
