Protesters occupy Greek highway toll stations

Activists angry at rising charges for highway tolls have occupied 19 toll stations across Greece, raising the bars and letting vehicles pass through without paying.

A total of 400 people have gathered at the toll station nearest to the capital Athens, about 25 kilometers north of the city, holding a banner that says "No to tolls - Free highways for all - We are not paying and neither should you." Most passing drivers are honking their horns in approval. The action is due to last two hours.

The activists object to the collection of tolls by the private contractors who operate the booths and who are also involved in expanding and maintaining the country's highway network.
