PM confers with visiting Cyprus President

Prime minister George Papandreou and visiting Cyprus President Demetris Christofias on Thursday discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue following the UN chief's recent talks with Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in Geneva.
Papandreou and Christofias called on Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots to manifest a constructive stance and to refrain from putting forward issues that are not part of the Cyprus reunification procedures, the relevant
UN resolutions and the agreements reached between the leaders of the two communities on Cyprus.
Christofias further expressed hope that a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue that will be acceptable to all Cypriots may be found by the end of 2011.
The two officials also discussed energy issues in the region, on which they shared the same opinions and are coordinating their actions.
The third major issue discussed was the developments in Egypt, with both sides expressing hope for a smooth transition.
Papandreou said that Greece will take whatever initiatives are necessary in that direction, while Christofias thanked the premier for the Hellenic Airforce's assistance to Cypriot citizens who had asked to be evacuated from Egypt.
