February was the worst month since the economic crisis began for the domestic fuel market, with sales down 20% compared with the same month last year, Hellenic Petroleum officials announced on Tuesday.
The same officials said the volume of sales fell 8.4% for petrol, 11.2% for diesel fuel and 12.6% for heating oil last year, while more than 1,000 gas stations either closed down or operate seasonally in 2010.
Hellenic Petroleum executives reassured there was no supply problem for Greek refineries because of the unrest in Libya. The group covers 15% of its needs from Libyan supplies (with the remaining 85% covered with supplies from Russia, former Soviet republics, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, while supplies for the next two months have been covered with oil shipments from west Africa.
