PES president on socialists Athens meeting

Party of European Socialists (PES) President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said on Thursday that the PES meeting in Athens on Friday and Saturday has an important agenda whose "central issue is how the European Union will discuss, define and implement its economic governance, while the PES's priority is to support that this should be done in the most economically credible and socially responsible manner."

In a statement on the eve of a two-day PES Summit in Athens, Rasmussen expressed his "pride" for the meeting hosted together with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, adding that "last year and under extremely difficult conditions George Papandreou proved to be a real leader."

Rasmussen also referred to what he called "years of destructive conservative governance, noting that premier Papandreou "has put Greece on the right orbit" and that "destructive options by the previous conservative government have made nessessary the imposition of hard measures."

Rasmussen together with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou will be the summit's hosts.
