Greece to announce measures on Thursday

Greek government proceeds with the finalization of the measure packages in order to be published in the form of bills on Thursday.

The departure of Finance Minister Giorgos Papakonstantinou to Washington on Friday for the meeting of International Monetary Fund and World Bank set the deadline of the measures announcement on Thursday, according to officials.

Recent internal dispute may delay the announcement for a few days, but sources close to the Prime Minister state that there is no time left, as Greek government is obliged to passage of packages in May.

The measures are finalized and already approved by IMF/ECB/EU, which is in contact with the Greek government and is expected to arrive again in Athens in early May.

Sources note that the new measures are grouped into a multi-bill, which will ease the passage procedure. It will include at least three packages of measures:

1. The medium-term package for 2012-2015 period, which has been revised to €25m from €22m, according to sources. It is not clear whether the additional amount reflects 2011 measures or whether they will be determined after April 26, when Eurostat will announce the 2010 deficit.

2. The €50m privatization package, which aims on the reduction of debt.

3. The development - social support measures for the economy and vulnerable groups. Announcements will be possibly made by the Prime Minister, immediately after the publication of recovery measures.

Finance Ministry officials reveal that the largest spending cuts regard public enterprises, social and healthcare spending.

On the occasion of the arrival in Athens of the President of the EU Herman Van Rompuy on Tuesday, announcements on the privatization issue are likely, according to government officials.
