President to convene extraordinary meeting of Council of political party leaders

The President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias has invited the leaders of political parties to an extraordinary meeting tomorrow, Friday, at 12.30 noontime. Greek media report that the council will be convened at the request of Prime Minister George Papandreou and the initiative of the President.

So far consultations are ongoing in order to ensure the presence of all leaders. There has been no information about the agenda of the meeting. Most probably the ‘consensus for the new austerity package’.
According to economic news portal Capital, if no consensus solution will be found, all options for the political developments in Greece are open. Rumors and scenarios speak of the possibility of early elections, of a coalition government with broad participation of political parties or a government reshuffle involving technocrats and personalities of the public life.
Beginning of the week PM George Papandreou sought the consensus of the political leaders on the new austerity package or else . Only the far-right party LAOS and the tiny centre-right party of former Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyanni gave their OK.
