Finance, Interior ministries deny report of 40% cut in civil service salaries

Greece's finance and interior ministries on Tuesday denied a newspaper report of a 40 percent across-the-board cut in civil servants' wages with the introduction of the new salary scale.

The two ministries, in an announcement, reiterated that "there is no such planning in the context of the new civil servants' salary scale", adding that "such estimations lack contact with the reality".

The planning of the new salary scale concerns the lifting of injustices among civil servants carrying out the same work and having the same qualifications, in order to render the principle of equal remuneration for equal work a reality in the public sector, the announcement said.

The newspaper report said the reference to the "horizontal 40 percent cut in civil servants' salaries" was founded on estimates by the civil servants' umbrella federation Adedy.
