A dramatic meeting between Prime Minister George Papandreou and the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias took place at 1 pm on Wednesday amid thousands of protesters outside the Greek Parliament.
In front of the press, Papandreou told Papoulias:
” National effort is needed, we are in crucial historical moment. National consensus is needed. I am in contact with political leaders on this. We will continue with responsibility to bring the country out from the crisis”.
” National effort is needed, we are in crucial historical moment. National consensus is needed. I am in contact with political leaders on this. We will continue with responsibility to bring the country out from the crisis”.
With political commentators speaking of a ‘paralyzed’ government unable to tackle the crisis and address the crowds of protesters there are three scenarios about political changes.
1) Government Reshuffle 2) Bipartisan Government after Friday 3) Mid-Term Austerity Programme to be voted with 180 votes.
Early Elections have been reportedly ruled out.
Governing party PASOK has 155 seats. The Mid-Term could pass with 151 votes. however I was reading yesterday that 2/5 of Parliament members have to be present and that it would pass even with 120 votes.
The Economics Committee is scheduled to discuss the Mid-Term programme at 4.30 pm.
Prime Minister will address the public in the afternoon via television. Time not available yet.
