Theodorakis angry at municipal authorities' refusal to let him use Thessaloniki's central Square for anti-austerity protest

Renowned Music composer Mikis Theodorakis is angry at municipal authorities' refusal to let him use Thessaloniki's central Aristotle Square for an anti-austerity protest. On Wednesday evening, Theodorakis and Spitha supporters took over the central Thessaloniki square.

The municipality asked Theodorakis to choose another square, arguing that his protest would cause unnecessary disruption in the city's commercial center. The composer refused, accusing unspecified 'dark forces' of conspiring to stop the gathering.

Main opposition New Democracy MP for Thessaloniki Konstantinos Gioulekas publicly attacked the mayor's decision, in a statement in support of Mikis Theodorakis.

On May 31, Spitha had held a similar event in Athens at the entrance of the old university -Propylaia, where Theodorakis had drawn a crowd of over 50,000 people to his speech against the austerity measures.
