New case against Marinakis

A new case implicating the president of Olympiakos and the Super League, Vangelis Marinakis emerged on Monday as a prosecutor filed charges against the well-known shipowner for instigating and facilitating acts of violence.

According to the new case, which is separate from the one concerning match-fixing, Marinakis, the president of second-division side Ilioupoli Giorgos Tsakogiannis and others cooperated so that a group of hardcore Olympiakos fans would travel to Corinth on March 13, ahead of the Korinthos vs Panachaiki match for the third division, "in order to provoke riots and to have Panachaiki president Alexis Kouyias get a penalty."

Kouyias is the prominent, if controversial, lawyer who blew the whistle earlier this season against match-fixing suspects Tsakogiannis, Marinakis and of course Achilleas Beos.

"What stems from the conversations is that Tsakogiannis informs [Ioannis] Papadopoulos that he has made arrangements and Vangelis Marinakis is aware for the move of Olympiakos fans to cause riots," the prosecutor's report suggests.

The case is added to that concerning fixing of games and for illegal betting and is likely to create further unrest in Greek football given that it identifies top officials inciting violence.

Nevertheless, the Super League decided on Monday to ratify the final table for the 2010-2011 season, despite all outstanding issues and the protests by a number of clubs.

In another conversation, Tsakogiannis is heard asking an Ilioupoli hardcore fan to gather some more fans and attack the president of Ionikos, Constantinos Charalambidis on February 27.
