Greece coach Ilias Zouros sees one after another his key players drop out of the preparation for the 2011 European Championship in Lithuania, as on Sunday Vassilis Spanoulis added his name to the list of absentees.
The Olympiakos player pulled out of the national team's preparation for the tournament scheduled for August 31 to September 18 due to an adductor strain that had also troubled him in the last few months of the 2010-11 season.
In the next few days the Greece guard will undergo an operation that is set to keep him sidelined for about two months.
Spanoulis has been added to a long list of notable absences, that also includes the names of Dimitris Diamantidis, Thodoris Papaloukas, Costas Tsartsaris, Loukas Mavrokefalidis and possibly Nick Calathes, unless the treatment he is undergoing in the US has him ready in time for the tip-off.
Stratos Perperoglou, who has also pulled out temporarily due to another injury, is likely to be back to training by July 30.
The squad is preparing at this first stage at Karpenisi, in central Greece, before starting with friendly games in Cyprus to gear up for the tournament in Lithuania.
Greek basketball legend Nick Galis commented on the number of players who have ruled themselves out of the national team, saying: "I do not understand this need for vacation that they cite. When I played basketball I had to wait until the age of 35 to get my first holiday."
