Waterpolo: Greece win 12-10 in Worlds' quarterfinals
The women's national team is going from strength to strength as it beat the Netherlands 12-10 on Monday to make the World Championship semifinals in Shanghai.
Greece have a perfect record of four wins in four games and are into the last four for a second consecutive world championship.
Coach Giorgos Morfesis's players will now face Italy in the semifinal on Wednesday.
The Dutch, who are the Beijing Olympics' gold-medalists led at the start of the quarterfinal, but the Greeks enjoyed a partial 8-1 score in their favour to take the game beyond their opponents who did not have enough time to react after that.
Antigoni Roumbesi was Greece's top scorer in the match with three goals.
"Our original target had been to get to the quarterfinals. We did that by topping our group, which exceeded our expectations, and now we are into the semis we are aiming at a medal," said Morfesis.
"We have two opportunities to get a medal, but we want to take the first one and go to the final. This is a wide open tournament with teams like the US, Spain and the Netherlands out of the semifinals," he added.
In swimming, Aris Grigoriadis could not qualify to the final of the 100 metres backstroke, but clocked a time (54.22 seconds) that secures him a ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games. He is now looking forward to the 50-metre backstroke qualifier on Saturday.
