Ilioupoli relegated for match-fixing

Ilioupoli was relegated from the second to the third division of Greek football on Wednesday for the match fixing scandal, as the eastern Athens club was deemed responsible for nine matches thought to be manipulated in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

The disciplinary committee of the Football League also imposed life bans on Ilioupoli owner Giorgos Tsakogiannis and president Nikos Chalkos as well as a two-year ban on the club's player Michalis Nikolopoulos.

A two-year ban from football was also imposed on Ethnikos Asteras coach Nikos Pantelis, but his club was not seen to be responsible for his actions in relation to match-fixing. The decisions can all be appealed.

That pending, the Football League ratified the final table for the 2010-11 season and announced on Wednesday that: Panetolikos, PAS Yiannina and OFI are promoted to the Super League, Levadiakos and Doxa Dramas will also be promoted if the relegation penalties on Olympiakos Volou and Kavala are upheld (although the Super League had decided to have Larissa and Panserraikos take their place!), and that Ilioupoli, Ethnikos, Ionikos, Anagennisi Karditsas and Trikala are relegated to the third division, or Football League 2.

From the third to the second division the teams to earn promotion are Anagennisi Epanomis, Panachaiki, Kalloni and Vyzas Megaron, with Fokikos and Iraklis Psachnon to meet in a play-off for the last remaining spot, unless the disciplinary committee's decisions are reversed by the appeals' committee of the Hellenic Football Federation.

The new season for the Football League starts on September 25.
