It's the year of truth for the euro, with 2012 set to determine
whether a 10-year-old currency can still pay its way without the
countries that use it breaking apart.
If 2011 went down as the
"annus horribilis" for the European Union's flagship icon of
integration, leaders of Germany, France and debt-laden monetary partners
are now staring into a precipice after months spent burying their heads
in the sand.
