Surrounded by orange orchards and olive groves and fronted by azure
waters, the hamlet of Porto Heli in the Peloponnese is a yachtsman's
paradise and a magnet for villa-owning Athenians.
And until recently, it had nearly one offshore company for each of its 2,000 full-time inhabitants.
"Welcome
to the Liechtenstein of Greece, a tax haven just two-and-a-half hours
from Athens," jokes Angelos Vlahoyiannis, an 80 something year-old
retired farmer lounging with other locals at a portside cafe, soaking in
the midday sun.
