‘Unkempt’ Ikaria

Joseph Georgirenes isn’t the only man of letters to devote a few of them to the Greek island of Ikaria. As Dan Buettner noted in the magazine last weekend, Georgirenes found the air and water there “most commendable,” and a major reason for the residents’ long lives. But then he would, I suppose — he was the bishop of Ikaria back in the 17th century.
