The Greek government and opposition political parties strongly condemned terrorism Thursday after a bomb blast rocked an Athens courthouse, causing material damage but no injuries.
Spokesman George Petalotis said the government denounced any action, with no ethical nor popular support, that aimed to undermine democracy and terrify citizens. Authorities would respond quickly and the perpetrators would face the condemnation of Greek society and the state.
"Terrorism attacks do not startle democracy," Greek Justice Minister Haris Kastanidis said after visiting the site of the attack, which police have unofficially attributed to local militants.
Noting that the domestic terrorism issue remained a challenge, despite the arrests of suspected militants over the years, main opposition party New Democracy also condemned the attack, stressing that the phenomenon was a threat to the whole of society.
Left parties commented that with such attacks, militants change the agenda and harm the interests of Greek citizens, since they distracted attention from the critical economic and social problems of the debt-ridden country.
"Terrorism actions, criminality and rejection of the political status quo lead Greece to anarchy," warned the populist Popular Orthodox Rally party (LAOS).
Thursday's bomb attack was also denounced by the Greek Administrative Court Judges Union, which asked authorities to step up safety measures at courthouses.
