Celtic boss Neil Lennon eager to hold onto Old Firm hero Georgios Samaras

Neil Lennon insists he's looking to extend Old Firm hero Georgios Samaras' stay at Celtic and not cash in on the Greek striker whose double helped overcome Rangers at Ibrox yesterday.

Samaras - who hadn't netted in the league all season ahead of the Ne-erday encounter - fired himself back into the limelight with both goals in the 2-0 victory over his side's bitter
rivals.

The towering World Cup star is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with moves to Spain and Portugal in recent months.

But after yesterday's success Lennon hinted he would be pressing ahead with talks to extend the frontman's stay in the east end of Glasgow.

Asked if Celtic would be tempted to cash in on the striker in this month's transfer window Lennon said: "After a performance like that I wouldn't think so, no.

"He has not made any inroads to leave and not caused me one bit of trouble. He is a good pro but needs to be more consistent.

"That's his first two league goals this season. He knows that and we will keep trying to get the best out of him because you saw today what a player he can be.

"I had a feeling about him today but didn't think he would play that well. He's only 25 so still hasn't reached his peak. He set the benchmark and people will be expecting him to play like that every week.

"We don't - but he has the attributes to be whatever he wants to be. It's just getting him to do it every one in two games instead of one in five."

Lennon resisted the urge to sell Samaras last summer and remains keen to extend the Greek star's stay at Parkhead. He added: "It's between the two parties what happens now. But he has not done himself any harm today."
