Direct attack by PM to the Left

PM Giorgos Papandreou, in his speech at the meeting of PASOK's Parliamentary Group fired direct shots at the Parties of the Left on the occasion of the occupation of the Athens Law School by immigrants.

He spoke of an attempt to service petty-party expediencies and promotion of lawlessness in violation of academic freedoms.

He said characteristically that «Left parties and progress are not lawlessness… it is not investing in a screwed-up society, rejoice with images of destruction that travel around the world» and added that «we recently promoted progressive and effective rules with the regulations voted by the parliament on the policy of granting political asylum».

He also added, strengthening his attack on the Left, that «it is not progressive for a State to keep hundreds of useless organizations to service clientelistic interests and then send the bill to the citizens… Progress and the Left does not confuse progress with statism».

He then wondered whether «it is the policy of the Left to pass debts to your children…» and if «it is progressive to allow some people to come to retirement at 45 or legislate unacceptable exemptions for certain professional categories or let thousands of traders to not issue receipts».

«It is a one-way street to transparency and in the past we lost the thread among the various powers thus creating a society of complicity. But we are not the same, and we don’t bare equal responsibilities because this is a populist generalization, the refuge of every guilty person».

He underlined that Greece must move from covering-up to the thinking «all out in the open» and accused ND for the practices of the past with which it was enforcing the corruption.

He also announced a set o governmental initiatives on the operation of Justice, the finance of the Parties, the electoral law, the separation of powers, the strike at corruption. Regarding the national debt he said that today we have the ability to control it.

During his speech the PM raised the tones against the «traditional Left» criticizing among other things, the «destruction of academic freedom» which will “give birth to destructive reflexes for the country”.

Exarhos statements

«Greek citizens like the PASOK Parliamentary Group not only welcome but also support the governments’ initiatives to change the image of the country and take her out of the crisis» underlined the secretary of the Group, Vasilis Exarhos, during his speech at the meeting.

He also stressed that PASOK and its MP’s are obliged to talk to the people about the exit plan of the country from the crisis, which is not limited to the steps taken for our loan obligations.

Answering «comments»  that are heard lately about servicing the interests of PASOK ministers he said that «yes, the ministers do service interests, the interests of the citizens».
