Foreign nationals arrested in massive rail line theft ring

Authorities on Wednesday announced the arrest of an alleged gang of thieves that cost the state-owned railways an estimated 1.3 million euro in damages in stolen copper railway cables.

According to reports, the suspects operated mainly along the Dekeleia-Oinoi line, stealing the overhead copper cables that transmit electricity along the line.
In addition to the financial damage, they also placed the safety of the railway network at serious risk.

Police apprehended seven foreign nationals (five Pakistanis, an Indian and an Albanian) in Viotia prefecture, north of Athens, with 1,850 kilos of copper cable taken from various sections of the northeast Attica railway network in their possession.

Under questioning, the suspects admitted that they had been operating for the past two months and selling the stolen cables for scrap.

All seven were led before an Athens first instance court prosecutor on Tuesday.
