Government spokesman Yiorgos Petalotis in a statement expressed the hope that Wednesday's action by main opposition New Democracy party leader Antonis Samaras to address a letter to the European Commission president on the need for issuing the eurobond will now constitute a steadfast position of the ND party "for the support of this proposal of great importance."
Petalotis said that it is a proposal "that the government and prime minister
George Papandreou have been developing and supporting for a long time at European level and despite the fact that only yesterday ND characterised this proposal of ours a 'communication gimmick'."
The spokesman concluded by saying "we also hope that the main opposition party, even now, will walk along the path of responsibility, something that it owes the Greek people."
