Greek Deputy PM describes newspaper readers as ‘Animals’

He is the Vice-President in the Greek government or else Deputy Prime Minister of Greece. Theodoros Pangalos, one of the most powerful politicians, a real overweight in the local political scene, notorious for his strong language has developed a touching inclination to the animal kingdom. After having recently described civil servants as “curs” Pangalos hit back yesterday and  decorated  newspaper journalists and  readers as “animals” and students audience at Oxford university as “students
of  an ass”.
Occasion for his new choleric outburst was a video from his speech at the University of  Oxford UK in May 2010. There, Theodoros Pangalos  said that  citizens as more corrupt that politicians: “No politician is so corrupt, to go to the streets to recruit voters. Sitting in his office and corrupt people go and find him” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApZB-Mp1j7s (0:24:50 – 0:25:12).
Among other Pangalos called the Greeks participating at the 1821 revolution against the Ottoman occupations as a ”bunch of illiterate peasants who barely spoke Greek”.

Reactions grew strong as excerpts from his speech were printed on the right-wing newspaper Eleftheros Typos and drove Pangalos’ blood pressure into alarming heights.
Angry about the revelations Theodoros Pangalos told journalists yesterday: “Some students of an ass at Oxford isolated audio from my speech. Some animals in Eleftheros Typos reproduced these extracts. But even more, I wonder about the animals that read them”.
Following Pangalos’ statements, the offended newspaper published an op-ed letter commenting that “Mr. Pangalos depictions reflect his ethos and personality. It is now up to the prime minister to see what to do with the abysmal and serial fling abuser Vice PM. ”
Center-right main opposition party Nea Dimocratia  accused Pangalos of  “antidemocratic attitude and brutal authoritarianism” and asked PM George Papandreou to do something.

Insulting the Public

It is not the first time that Greek Vice PM, elected politician since 1981, insults the public, respectively the Greek taxpayers who come up for his parliamentary salary and a series of benefits.
Some weeks ago he described civil servants as ‘curs’ saying that “when you hire a cur he will always remain a cur”.

Last summer, he drew angry reactions when he openly declared that Politicians and People had a common share in overspending public money. “We ate the money together” he stressed.
As expected the strongest reactions came from non-civil servants , especially those underweight….

Why still in office?

It’s not only the opposition that wonders why Theodoros Pangalos is still holding a government office after spreading  insults like a fan. Greek government sources  leaked to the media that some government ministers felt ‘embarrased’….
