Bank robber blamed for terror attack

Greek authorities claim that the country's most wanted bank robber - who twice escaped prison by helicopter - is behind a bombing that killed a senior police officer.

A police statement says an arrest warrant for murder and membership of a terrorist group has been issued against Vassilis Paleokostas, on the run since his second escape from a maximum security Athens prison in 2009.

Tuesday's statement says Paleokostas' fingerprints were found on the wrapping of a parcel bomb that exploded in the public order ministry last summer, killing ministerial aide Yiorgos Vassilakis.

The bombing was claimed by a group that used far-left rhetoric but did not name itself. Greece has seen an increase in militant attacks in the past two years.
