New round of election rumours within the government

Ten days have passed since the Prime Minister convened a meeting at
Ippokratous, in which he put an end to all rumours about premature elections.

Five days have also passed since the successive consultations with the Troika over Memorandum number 4, when Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou appeared to be asserting that there will be no elections...

However, government officials are not only sustaining the debate, but also some of them appear to support that under certain conditions, the ballot box will indeed come out.

"No one can bear the cost of early elections", stated Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou today, in an interview in "Imerisia" newspaper. In response to a question, she stated that "under the circumstances today, elections will not only not bring about a solution but will also create a political vacuum for some time within Greece, as well as questions and doubt about the country's course abroad. This cost can be borne by nobody".

Yet, Thanos Moraitis, vice Minister for the Enviroment, Energy and Climate Change, stated to "Proto Thema" journalist Yannis Makriyannis, that he is in favour of resorting to elections, since decisions being made affect the future of the next generations.

Protothema.gr has pointed out that despite statements to the contrary, the election scenario always remains open for Maximou, especially with the additional memorandum events, but also due to the extensive participation of citizens in the strikes this past Wednesday.
