Public transport came to a halt in Athens on Tuesday due to a
strike called by urban transport employee unions in protest of a bill revamping mass transit, which is due to be voted on in parliament the same day.Downtown Athens will be inaccessible for several hours on Tuesday as the striking transport employees will stage a protest rally outside parliament beginning at noon, effectively clsoing off surrounding streets.
Commuter transport employees held a motorcycle demonstration on Monday, the day parliament began a heated debated on the bill. Protestors gathered at central Kotzia Square, from where they set off on motorcycles through downtown Athens, by parliament, and ending up at the Transport Ministry on Messogion Avenue.
