Farm union representatives in the northern Greece prefecture of Serres on Sunday said they would remove tractors and other machinery from the sides of a major highway heading to the Greek-Bulgarian frontier and the Promahonas border post, as efforts over the past week to block the border crossing -- in order to press for various demands -- proved futile.
Several farmers were arrested last week for trying to reach the border post with farm machinery, ostensibly to block the crossing. They had been blocked at the 26th kilometre of the Serres-Promahonas highway by police units.
