The Hellenic national minority in Albania is “sitting on hot coals” during this period, due to the upcoming census, schedules to take place this spring.
The fragile political situation with the recent bloody events combined with Europe’s reports that the country still has a lot of steps to take to be fully democratized, add an additional “headache” in Northern Epirus residents, who are possessed by a sense of insecurity, on whether there is objective recording of the population.
Between all this a new piece of data promises to shake Albania’s societal life, since thousands of Albanians are requesting that their nationality changes to Greek, causing reactions in the Albanian side. The majority of requests stems from the region of Northern Epirus and specifically from Argirokastron, Aghioi Saranda, Premeti and Koritsa, where the number of people asking to change their nationality to Greek is disproportionate to applications for other nationalities.
