Turkey fugitive flown to Cyprus

Greek Authorities say a pro-Kurdish politician wanted in Turkey has been flown back to Cyprus to have an asylum claim processed.

Police and judicial authorities said Tuesday that 46-year-old Mustafa Sarikaya had been ordered back to Cyprus. Under European Union asylum rules, the request must be handled by Cyprus, where Sarikaya entered the EU first.

Sarikaya was a senior member of Turkey's Democratic Society Party, which was outlawed in 2009 over alleged ties to Kurdish rebels.

He was arrested on January 24 while traveling on a fake Bulgarian passport. A court in this northern Greek city allowed him to file an asylum claim as a fugitive from potential persecution.

Turkey has no diplomatic relations with Cyprus, and only recognizes a Turkish-Cypriot breakaway state in the north of the island.
