Doctors who work in Greece's social security fund system have
walked off the job in a 48-hour strike, demanding that their fixed-term contracts be made permanent.Those who began their strike Tuesday will be joined by state hospital doctors and health workers holding a 24-hour strike Wednesday against health sector spending cuts.
Greek workers have been staging frequent strikes and demonstrations over the past year as the country has struggled amid a severe financial crisis.
Greece was saved from bankruptcy last year by a €110 billion ($154 billion) package of bailout loans from other EU countries that use the euro and the International Monetary Fund. In return, the government has been implementing strict austerity measures, including spending cuts and tax hikes, that have angered many Greeks.
