Greek sprinter Thanou in court for perjury case

Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou made a rare
appearance in court Tuesday to face charges of staging a motorcycle crash to avoid a drug test on the eve of the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Thanou appeared before the panel of three judges to face the perjury charges, but did not testify. Fellow Greek sprinter Costas Kenteris, who faces the same charges, was not present.

The trial started this year after four years of postponements.

Thanou made no comment when leaving the court — wearing earphones as she walked by reporters — and is expected to testify on March 14.

Thanou won silver in the 100 meters at the 2000 Olympics, when Kenteris earned gold in the 200.
