Laos tables amendment on police use of firearms

Opposition Popular Orthodox Rally (Laos) MPs on Friday tabled an amendment in Parliament "on the use of firearms by police officers during the pursuit of (armed) suspects" to be included in a citizen protection ministry-sponsored draft law.

The three Laos MPs, who have signed the proposed amendment, pointed out that Article 3 in Law No 3169/03 regulates the use of firearms by police officers in a vague way and law enforcement officers are not certain when they can use their service guns.

They also said repeated incidents of police officers killed in the line of duty made the amendment of the relevant legislation imperative.
