Merchant shipping fleet down in volume, up in capacity in January

The Greek merchant shipping fleet fell 1.1 percent in volume in January this year, compared with the same month in 2010, after an increase of 1.5 percent recorded in the previous 12-month period, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Friday. 
The statistics service, in a report, said a total of 2,098 vessels were registered. The report also said that the capacity of the Greek merchant shipping fleet grew 4.0 percent in January, after a 5.2 percent increase recorded in January 2010, to 43,358,556 dwt.
