Police have staged a large-scale operation to prevent the march in Thessaloniki from escalating into violence and widespread destruction of property. Officers moved quickly after the start of the march when some of the participants turned fire extinguishers on riot police, who responded with a heavy use of tear gas and stun grenades.
Several of the marchers reached Thessaloniki University campus, which is normally off-limits to police. Authorities say they are on alert for possible violent incidents later Saturday.
