The house at the corner of Apostolou Pavlou and Aghiou Dimitriou Street in Thessaloniki, where Mustafa Kemal Ataturk - the founder of modern Turkey - was born in 1881 has been designated a historical monument, following a unanimous decision by a ministry of culture directorate, it was announced on Friday.
In 1935, the Thessaloniki municipal council donated the residence to the Turkish state, which decided to convert it into a museum.
The three-floor building, dating back to 1870, was repaired in 1981 and repainted in its original pink color. Most of the furniture is authentic and any missing items were replaced with furniture from the Turkish leader's mausoleum and from the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul.
