Energy Minister: No Discussion On Reducing RES Tariffs
Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change Tina Birbili told Capital.gr that the system of guaranteed prices consists the core of the policy for the development of the renewable energy sources, stating that there was no discussion with the European Union on the issue.
“There in on such discussion with the European Commission at any level and it is clear that through carbon emissions and auctions starting in June we will be able to cover the deficit in Hellenic Transmission System Operator”, Tina Birbili told Capital.gr, repeating that there has been neither formal nor informal discussion with the EU on the matter.
This statement of considerable importance responds to the speculation which has caused turmoil in the green energy market. Representatives of investors and large companies “see” an environment of uncertainty regarding the future of subsidized prices, following the reports related to the Portuguese Memorandum of Understanding. Moreover, it provides the revision of RES subsidies.
However, in Greece, there is no indication or discussion on the issue, according to the minister. The main reason is that the RES market in Portugal is more mature than in Greece. A capacity of 1200MW in wind farms had been installed in Greece until the end of 2010, while Portugal had almost 4000MW.
