Greek union leader warns of 'employment crash'

The head of Greece's largest labor union has warned that deeper austerity measures planned by the Socialist government would cause an "employm
ent crash," pushing the jobless rate to new records.

In an interview with the AP, Yiannis Panagopoulos, leader of the GSEE union, accuses the European Union of imposing unfair cost-cutting measures that would cause suffering for pensioners and low-income wage earners.

Panagopoulos was hosting on Thursday a meeting of European trade union groups. The day before, the government said it would comply with EU demands to broadly double the level of austerity measures for 2011 to maintain its bailout loan commitments.
