Athletics: National squad secures promotion

The national athletics squad is returning to the Super League of the European Athletics Association after finishing second at the First Division of the European Team Championship at Izmir on Sunday.


Greece secured promotion to the top level of the national team event along with hosts Turkey and Norway after a great all-around performance by Greek athletes on both days.

The final table after all 40 events had Turkey on top with 329 points, with Greece trailing with 307.5 and Norway in third with 290. Romania missed out on promotion, after collecting 282.5 points.

Greece secured maximum points on Sunday from Costas Philippidis in pole vault, while Stavros Georgiou was second in triple jump.
