Ferreira to stay on PAO bench - AEK jitters as Jimenez may go

Panathinaikos decided on Tuesday to hold on to manager Jesualdo Ferreira for the new season following a meeting between the Portuguese coach and the Greens’ acting president, Dimitris Gontikas, a day earlier.

The club's governing committee was informed by Gontikas and agreed unequivocally to kepp the coach who may have missed out on both trophies this season but led the team to next year's Champions League by topping the play-offs.

In the coming days Panathinaikos will also appoint a technical director, who will be knowledgeable about the Greek game. Reports suggested Jasminko Velic is the favorite for the post, which he also held for a few years in the previous decade.

The former Braga, Porto and Malaga coach will have a limited budget to work with and will have a mandate to create a fast and youthful side relying mostly on up-and-coming as well as ambitious players.

Across Athens, AEK are no longer certain it can hold on to its own coach, Manolo Jimenez, as the Spaniard may be lured away by Madrid club Getafe.

The Spanish team's president, Angel Torres, said he has already spoken to Jimenez's agent, adding that "Jimenez may be in Greece but wants to leave."
