Olympiakos completed their fifth double in a row in men’s water polo, defeating Vouliagmeni 7-3 away on Saturday to win the league final series 3-1.
The players of coach Vangelis Pateros put aside their financial woes, as they are owed significant amounts of money by their club, to attain the Reds’ 12th league title in the last 13 years.
Olympiakos were dominant in this last game of the final series at Vouliagmeni, leading 3-0 from the first couple of minutes. The 5-2 score at half-time reduced the second half to a mere formality.
Vouliagmeni were the only Greek team to beat Olympiakos this season, and did so twice, although the first one happened during the Olympiakos players’ strike.
“Winning the double under these circumstances shows the quality of this team,” said Olympiakos star Christos Afroudakis, scorer of one of the champions’ goals on the night.
Olympiakos, Vouliagmeni and Panathinaikos will represent Greece in next season’s Euroleague.
