AEK close to landing Gudjohnsen

AEK are in advanced talks with former Chelsea and Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen with a view to a two-year deal, according to reports confirmed by AEK coach Manolo Jimenez.

Iceland international Gudjohnsen has also been a target for English Championship outfit West Ham and was said to have reached a verbal agreement with Hammers’ boss Sam Allardyce, but AEK’s technical director Arnar Gretarsson seems to have made significant inroads into snatching the player for the Greek Cup winners.

The latest reports on Saturday afternoon suggested that Gudjohnsen had a long meeting with Gretarsson in London and accepted AEK’s proposal for a two-year contract, but would first like to speak with Allardyce to whom he had reportedly given his word.

Jimenez stated on Saturday before the AEK squad’s departure for their training camp in Slovenia that “if that signing is completed it will really be something different. This is a very big footballer. His case is difficult though and it will be a footballing as well as financial challenge or AEK,” the Spanish manager said.

The 32-year-old scorer spent last season at Stoke City and Fulham, having won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2009.

He has 64 caps with the Iceland national team for which he has scored 24 goals.
