PM announces inter-party committee on policies and coordinated function of state

Prime minister George Papandreou announced the planned establishment of an inter-party committee that will discuss policies and measures for ensurance of the institutions, the coordinated function of the state and averting phenomena of violence, while he also addressed an invitation to dialogue to the country's politicians, intellectuals and citizens.

"Ideological terrorism has no place in democracy," Papandreou said during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, and condemned a recent spate of attacks against MPs, which he said are incited by "extreme political forces".

Papandreou issued an invitation to dialogue to all the political and social forces of the country for dealing with the recent phenomena of violence.

The government, he said, is expected to table soon a proposal for the establishment of an inter-party committee that will deal with the above issues, which range from the function of the political system to enhancement of the democratic institutions, but also the police.

Papandreou said that no one has the right to do as he pleases and that everyone together must ensure the smooth operation of democracy and society's freedom.

The premier condemned the recent incidents of violence, stressing that an organised state cannot tolerate violence whether coming from isolated individuals or organised groups.

He said that the attacks against parliament "amputate democracy", and warned that if the principle of violence prevails, it would be a manifestation of barbarity.

Papandreou further warned that every time that anti-parliamentarianism has been cultivated, "deviation" was not late in making its appearance.
