The boards of the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE) and the Civil Servants Supreme Administrative Council (ADEDY) decided during their joint session on Wednesday to hold a 24-hour strike in the public sector and public utilities on October 5 and a general strike in the public and private sectors on October 19.
"We are in constant confrontation with policies that are unacceptable and disastrous and without a prospect," GSEE president Yiannis Panagopoulos said after the meeting and stressed that "we shall continue the struggle against the government and the troika for as long as necessary."
"If the troika threatens Greek society that it has a 'marathon' before it, it must know that our reply will also be a militant 'marathon'," the GSEE president concluded.
On his part, ADEDY secretary general Ilias Iliopoulos termed the measure of the labour reserve a "firing squad", saying that it will create 250,000 new unemployed, while mentioning that in the past days alone about 20,000 new pensioning applications have been submitted in the public sector.
