The euro zone was conceived as a destination for national economies, not a transit point. Having arrived there, countries are not supposed to leave. Ever.
The currency union was meant to hammer disparate nations into a solid fortress of monetary and fiscal rectitude, safe from speculative attacks on the weakest thanks to the shared good name of the strongest.
