Germans say no to hosting Greece friendly

The German football federation (DFB) unexpectedly informed the Greek one (EPO) on November 2 that it cannot host Greece's friendly game with Romania at Reutlingen on November 15 "for security reasons."

Greece had arranged for a friendly game in Germany in order to satisfy the huge demand by Greek expatriates to see the national team play, but less than two weeks before the match the DFB told EPO it could not stage it after all, according to an EPO statement on Wednesday.

EPO also announced that "after this development, there are efforts being made to find an alternative," with reports suggesting that the federation has knocked on Austria's door.

The German federation's decision came just 24 hours after the spotless behaviour of some 4,000 Greek fans at Dortmund in the Champions League game between local Borussia and Olympiakos.

Speculation suggested that the decision might be down to the political uncertainty in Greece that could turn the match into a demonstration, although that appears to be quite far-fetched.

It is more likely that the German federation was upset by the behavior of Olympiakos fans in Piraeus in the home game against Borussia, as they produced a banner that appeared to be offensive to Germany.

Greece will also play Russia in another friendly on November 11 in Piraeus.
