Homeowners unable to pay the property tax will be exempted from the new duty provided they pass a test proving their inability to pay, the finance ministry announced today.
The exemption was decided at a meeting held on Monday chaired by the finance minister, Evangelos Venizelos, and attended by Public Power Corporation (DEI) officials.
The means testing will carried out by three-member teams of inspectors.
The meeting also agreed to exempt all physically disabled people with a disability rating of 80 percent or more and anyone on mechanical support from paying the tax.
Those who fall under these categories are required to inform the finance ministry immediately.
DEI officials at the meeting reported that the flow of payment of the property tax through electricity bills was satisfactory, with 80 percent of bills already paid.
