Agent Reveals Netherlands International Stijn Schaars Rejected Panathinaikos Move

AZ skipper Stijn Schaars has decided not to join Greek giants Panathinaikos, according to his agent...
Dutch international Stijn Schaars has decided not to leave 2008-09 Eredivisie champions AZ for Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos.

The Greens were keen to add the 26-year-old holding midfielder to their squad in January, but Schaars is not interested in a move to Greece.

"They wanted to sign Stijn, but there's nothing going on that front any more, his agent Karel Jansen revealed to Goal.com NL. "That's mainly down to some things that have happened at Panathinaikos this season.

"Some fans recently stormed the pitch and it wasn't exactly quiet at the club. Some typical Greek passionate behaviour. That scared us off a bit so we've decided not to continue negotiations. Stijn prefers to move to another nation.

"There's plenty of interest, but we haven't started any serious negotiations yet. We'll have to wait and see whether something happens this winter. A transfer at the end of the season is also an option for us."
