Olympiakos confirmed the shocking transfer of Raffik Djebbour on Friday evening, as the French-born Algerian has signed a contract of six months that can be renewed in the summer for two more years. Prolific goalscorer Djebbour, is known to cause problems in most of the clubs he has been at, but that did not stop Olympiakos from agreeing to sign him in the January transfer window, even though Olympiakos president Vangelis Marinakis had ruled out any more transfers after
the acquisition of Yiannis Maniatis.
"I am happy to have joined a big club like Olympiakos. This is a major step in my career. I want to enjoy my presence in the team as much as possible. I would like to enjoy Champions League games at the Karaiskakis Stadium," stated Djebbour after signing his contract.
It is only a few days since the Algerian striker terminated his contract with AEK following a spat with manager Manolo Jimenez and a threat of the case going to court.
Eventually AEK and the player agreed to an out of court settlement, but Olympiakos raised many eyebrows across Greece when they moved to buy the player.
Foul play
His agent until Friday morning, Yiannis Lypimenos, cried foul as he thinks there was some backroom dealing with the player's move to Piraeus, without him knowing anything about it.
"There was some kind of game played about the signing of Djebbour by Olympiakos. I have nothing to do with it," said the agent who expressed his disgust at the developments and said he distanced himself from the Algerian upon hearing about his move to the Reds.
"This is an issue of strategy and decency. When AEK invited me to terminate his contract it was all clear. AEK did everything on their part to hold on to Raffik," Lypimenos told Novasport FM.
"There was an agreement between the two sides but Raffik did not want to sign it. It was a verbal agreement but he did not complete it and I do not know why," added the Greek agent.
While still a Panionios player, Djebbour had come close to signing for Olympiakos in the summer of 2008, too, but he ended up at AEK.
He has also played for Ethnikos Asteras and Atromitos in Greece.
