Open letter to PM over plans to drop IT from school curriculum

Computer studies teachers in Greek high schools on Wednesday sent an open letter to Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, asking him to intervene and stop a possible decision to drop IT classes from the curriculum of the new lyceum, the Greek upper highschool.

The teachers point out that this would be an unprecedented move worldwide, especially at a time when the government was emphasising the importance of new technologies and their role in education.

"In an age when everyone is proclaiming the transition from an information society to a knowledge society, in an age when digital literacy and the development of thought determine development in all those areas that contribute to the prosperity of a country and its people, the graduates of the New Lyceum are in danger of being condemned to digital illiteracy and ignorance of the algorithmic way of thinking," they emphasise.
