Court finds Cosmote Greece union strike illegal

The Court of First Instance of Athens approved a claim by Cosmote Greece that a strike organised by the operator's association of workers on 3-4 March was illegal. The Court ruled that further demonstrations as of 8 March will not be considered a legal strike.

According to the decision, these demonstrations could be classified as non-allowable pressure measures. The president of Cosmote's Employees Association and the president of OME-OTE testified during the court's hearing that workers have not been prevented from attending work during the strike, doors of buildings were never sealed, all workers were normally at their posts and worked, and that representatives of workers remained outside the building with the sole purpose of informing the workers.

Cosmote Greece recently launched a staff reduction programme whereby it offers an exit package ranging between one and three years' salary. According to Cosmote's programme, a number of criteria, including age, work experience and family status are taken into consideration, while specific employee benefits, such as private and family health insurance, medical and child care benefits are being maintained for a significant period of time.
